February Review

By John Washburn - Posted on 27 February 2008

In early February we meet with riders and parents/guardians to cover the program and lay out expectations. Documents are signed to establish understanding.

We fit the riders for bikes, helmets, and gloves.

We conducted indoor training sessions for two weeks in February.
We meet each Monday and Thursday at the downtown YMCA for ninety minutes.
The group of riders and mentors is broken into three sections which rotate through different workouts.
One workout is thirty minutes on stationary bikes in a spin class. The goal is to teach the riders to pedal for thirty minutes without stopping. We encourage quick cadence to result in efficient riding techniques.
Another workout is thirty minutes on the indoor running track. We demonstrate the strength grows through exercise. It also teaches sharing the road (track).
The third workout is band resistance training on Monday and educational sessions on Thursday. Among the topics are nutrition, clothing, safety and bike maintenance.
